Charter:
TheCarConnection.com is the Web’s auto authority, providing unbiased news, reviews, and features for Internet audiences. Publishing some the auto world’s most respected reporters and reviewers, creating much of its own custom content — including buyers’ guides, photo galleries, and weekly car-owner tips, TheCarConnection.com is the online evolution of today’s consumer and industry car magazines. TCC has won more awards than any other automotive content online including the International Automotive Media Award for Best of the Web. TCC takes great pride in its news, and in publishing its highly regarded “Daily Edition” email newsletter, sponsored in part by WJR 760 AM Radio, it consistently brings breaking news and content to its viewers and partners. To cope with the ever-increasing traffic load stemming from the delivery of breaking news, the consistent release of spy photos of cars not yet on the market, and the impact of direct linkage from AOL, TCC called upon Solvaris for help. The existing application was already built and the challenge was to restore application performance and scalability without a complete system redesign, which would have been cost prohibitive.

Solution:
In taking on the maintenance of TCC’s existing application, which had been built by a former vendor, Solvaris was presented with a unique challenge in that a complete system redesign was not an alternative. While traffic loads consumed virtually all available resources on the server, Solvaris began to do a root cause analysis and determine the probable bottlenecks in the current architecture. After determining that the database was being heavily hit with dynamic queries, some opportunities for improvement became obvious, but remained infeasible after performing a cost/benefit analysis on the solution. Time was also limited due to the massive traffic promised by an imminent deal with a major content provider. While Solvaris identified the areas of the application that could be re-architected — over a period of several months — to promote scalability and improve performance, a more immediate course of action was necessary to avert disaster.
